Zad was a particularly large Thark. Sarkoja persuaded him to challenge John Carter to a duel during the passage from Korad to Thark. After the lengthy battle Zad was slain, but John Carter almost did not survive the fight. Among the Tharks, Zad was known as an "o mad", a man with only one name. He could earn for himself a surname by killing one of his own warrior chieftains in honorable combat, an incentive that was exploited by Sarkoja.
