Stub Template Edit

Despite the passing of the author in 1950, the stub template is entirely appropriate, given the current quality of many, if not most, of the wiki's current articles. As you had indicated negatively about it previously, I thought it best to discuss it before revising the template and renewing or continuing its use. Auguststorm1945 00:09, January 19, 2011 (UTC)

I am unsure at this time, the continued marking of pages as a stub i think would be a good idea as there are many derivative works from the Edgar Rice Burroughs universe that could enrich the content of any of these pages. If derivative works are included hte canonical information will be seperated with some sort of devider though without a doubt. I think you can see an early version of whats planned on the sola page ralok 00:39, January 19, 2011 (UTC)
So, modification of the aforementioned template is fine? Auguststorm1945 01:09, January 19, 2011 (UTC)

yup. ralok 01:19, January 19, 2011 (UTC)

Your recent "housekeeping"...Edit

I did not give you adminship so that you could start dismantling my work. Try it again and your priveleges will be revoked. -- Gnostic 02:34, January 21, 2011 (UTC)

I didnt realize that you cared about those images that much . . . my bad ralok 03:19, January 21, 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for the welcome Edit

Thanks for the welcome aboard. I first heard of Barsoom after having read my father's copy of The Chessmen of Mars some 15 years ago. That being book 5 of the series, I have recently read books 1-4, and will be on the lookout for more. Russ3Z 19:23, January 31, 2011 (UTC)

Keep your eyes open, in my opinion they are all great. And if you have read anything from ERB's pellucidar, venus, tarzan, or moon series feel free to add it. ralok 03:51, February 1, 2011 (UTC)

Should also add I read, as a child, a book called Beyond the Farthest Star. I may still have it somewhere, and if so would you like information from it included, even thought it has no bearing on Barsoom? Russ3Z 16:38, February 2, 2011 (UTC)

I actually thought about beyond the fartehst star for a long while. And no, I do not feel its content should be added, as tehre is nothing connecting the story to the rest of the burroughs universe (to my knowledge) ralok 17:51, February 2, 2011 (UTC)

Main Page Edit

Hello, I need from you the names of the different portals you would like and also the images you would like to use. I will be building the system over at w:c:godisme so you can see the progress of it there if you ever want to check on it.--God (Pray) 03:23, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

Like this . . .

Earth Venus Moon Mars

(i wish those didnt suck so much)

the portals names would be "The Moon Maid" "The Martian Tales" "The Venus Series" "Earth and Below" (i think)

i would prefer the white area transparent/black but I am to stupid to know how, except maybe making it black, i could probably do that. ralok

or would it be tarzan, barsoom, moon maid, and amtor? Dangit why could edgar rice burroughs have been a little more consistant with his series. ralok 04:21, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

It should look like this I think, but big and on the front page. I am so confused as to why it is transparent now, it has to be the file format . . . why did it save differently this time i didnt do anything different

File:Prototype4.png

the first set of names i provided for the portals was better.

ralok 04:36, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

Ok, I can make the backgrounds transparent so Ill start building this.--God (Pray) 05:03, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

gah those images are terrible, i gotta remake them probably. I have no doubt for some reason that I am going to go through about eighty versions of these images ralok 05:34, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

Well, if you can get the images to be a little better and be .png files then they would look a little nicer--God (Pray) 05:43, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

im working on it right now. ralok 05:53, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

I need a better program for doing this, is this an essential step or can the image be replaced later? Im going to keep working on the images, but I am just wondering? ralok 06:02, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

They can always be replaced later. When I put the system in place on your wiki, they will have the generic file names of Mars.png, Earth.png, etc. Just whenever you upload good versions of the files, upload them under those names. I am creating content portals right now. Since I do not know the works of Burrough, I will instead put instructions on how to add the content in there yourself --God (Pray) 06:05, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

Thats good, ralok 06:11, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

I am just going to remove the contents section and pplace the portal links in that spot. I will transfer the contents to the martial tales portal and create specific links to the proper ontent on each portal page. (this I know I can do on my own, at least i think i know I can) ralok 09:09, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

I might even do away with the standard featured pages thing, instead putting a featured page on each individual portal. I wonder if it is possible to give different portals different wikia themes and stuff . . . I am getting way ahead of myself here, just need to focus on getting the portals up before I go crazy with themralok 09:13, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

600px

This is my dream, but I will settle for what is possible and what you can provide. I am not trying to overwhelm you, just showing what i hope for it to look like one day. I am sorry if I am coming off as sounding rude ralok 09:35, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

Its fine, Wikiportals are unfortunately not that customizable. The text will always appear right under the image. You can't use different themes on different pages unfortunately. Doing so would require some heavy CSS that wikia does not allow. --God (Pray) 18:48, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

understood . ralok 19:48, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

is it possible to use an image and just not use the text below it? Or to color the text the same as the background? or to like use a single image in place of four and have it so when you click on different places it lings differently (like the maps?)ralok 20:59, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

I can get rid of the text and just use the images if you would like. I would have to check on using the single image. Its called an image map and I know how to do it in web design but I am not sure if it is possible to do so with wiki code.--God (Pray) 21:21, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

OK, using individual images minus text is what I think the best option available is. You will find the new images uploaded above (over the old ones), the text is included as part of the image . . . also it took an houur to make these images for reasons unknown. I hope you can work with them. ralok 21:56, February 3, 2011 (UTC) hmmm . . . woah it actually looks kind of cool with the two sphere halves opposing each other . . but no i think i will stick with having it form a psuedosphere

forgot to sign ralok 21:59, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

Check it out, I have recreated what you have in that picture. --God (Pray) 22:15, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

Looks pretty dang good ralok 22:20, February 3, 2011 (UTC)
Alright then. I don't think I can do any more work on it today (night classes) but at the rate I am going, I might be able to have it all built by Monday and then can start transferring it onto here after that. We'll see how it goes.--God (Pray) 22:33, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

Its ok take all the time you need, . . . and up by monday, Yahoo. ralok 22:56, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

Hey there . . . i have put the gears into motion to get a logo to place on every portal to help make them more unique (once the portals are up I will attempt to add bakground images that match the portal logos . . if thats possible) I have also updated the portal images to make the sphere appear more regular ralok 23:43, February 5, 2011 (UTC)

ok . . . for some reason the mars chunk is hidiously broken . . . I shall look into this ralok 02:21, February 6, 2011 (UTC)

THERE IS FInALLY WORKED AFTER HOURS OF TRIAL aND ERROR . . . it works hahahahaha, a perfectish sphere. ralok 02:25, February 6, 2011 (UTC)

This is the LAST time i will be changing those images . . i swear. . . they are finally the way i want them . . perfect ralok 02:50, February 6, 2011 (UTC)

Sorry I have not gotten back to you, RL has been quite hectic. I may have to put this on hold for a few days as I am just so busy right now. The portals are almost done, I just have to construct the last one and make some minor changes such as getting the different portals to pop out and changing the color scheme for the different portals but what is up there now is the basic gist of it.--God (Pray) 21:34, February 7, 2011 (UTC)

I perfectly understand, the real world takes priority friend ralok 21:54, February 7, 2011 (UTC)

Update Edit

Alright, I am back now. I figured out some code that is going to make the portals look nicer. I will probably put them all in place over the weekend. GodPray  18:10,2/16/2011

HORAY :) ralok 19:11, February 16, 2011 (UTC)

The beginnings of the system are up. I will finish it tomorrow-- GodPray  01:36,2/21/2011

cool :) ralok 02:16, February 21, 2011 (UTC)

The portals are up and running. Currently they are a bunch of dummy links so you need to fill in the content. I left instructions in the place of where the actual content would go. All the pieces of the portals can be found in their respective categories, namely Category:Earth and Below portal, Category:The Venus Series portal, Category:The Moon Maid portal and Category:The Martian Tales portal. Each portal has an intro, a contents table, a featured article and a news section. There is one last bit of code I want to figure out but the portals are more or less complete. -- GodPray  21:56,2/22/2011

No problem man. It was a fun test of my skills. Let me know if you need any help with the portals.-- GodPray  00:39,2/23/2011

Main page Edit

I noticed that you recently changed the main page with links to go to pages that look broken. Do you mind if I take a stab at the layout? —Scott WikiaStaff.png (contact) 20:11, February 22, 2011 (UTC)

The portals were just added, and the beautification process hasnt started yet. You can "take a stab at it" if you wish, I am not that good at editing and any help is greatly appreciated. :) ralok 23:15, February 22, 2011 (UTC)

Re:Problem Edit

They seem to have removed the sidebar somehow. I know how to do it but I have been told numerous times by wikia staff that this is not allowed. How they got away with it I am not sure. I personally have done this through my personal JS if you would like that but it would only be visible to you.-- GodPray  01:54,2/23/2011

I find this all very odd. I would be willing to bet that is has something to do with the popularity of the fallout series. I will ask someone of a nice high up position about :) ralok 02:00, February 23, 2011 (UTC)
A lot of the larger wikis get special treatment. Wowwiki has 25% more content space. Memory Alpha- the star trek wiki, has a reduced global header. Wikia likes to play favorites.-- GodPray  02:21,2/23/2011

I think its shameful, but it is somewhat understandable. ralok 02:31, February 23, 2011 (UTC)

Hey.:) You hear about the Mass Effect 3 release date pushback. Or what about the Homosexual relationships now going to be in it. Oh and you wanna come back to the RvB and start talking again? I mean you ban is over over there.{{SUBST:Template:Sniperteam82308}} 01:23, May 18, 2011 (UTC)

Ha yea. And I'm begining to think Sanders may be the homosexual character for a male Shepard. As for you not having time to talk... ok. But just to let you know I've sulken into something horrible there... ACTUAL EDITING! And thats what I thought about the push back as well... oh and guess how I came across the information. Good Work Edit

Hey. Thanks for keeping this place running in my absence. Much of my attention over the last few months has been focused on trying to keep the struggling Mass Effect Fanon Wiki afloat after the disappearance of most of our people, so I am glad to see that this place isn't suffering for lack of my presence. Keep up the good work! (Also, stop arguing with SpartHawg all the time. We can't afford for this place to get divided up into factions, especially not over crap that happened on another wiki.) -- Gnostic 18:41, June 2, 2011 (UTC)

Request for design help Edit

Hi ralok. I'm happy to help give the wiki a new and improved look and functionality. It's the end of the work day for me (approaching 6 PM my time), so over the weekend, if you have time, please note any large images that you would like for me to make a new background with, and link me to them. Also, if you've seen a main page layout at another wiki that you would like to implement here, please link me to that as well, and I'll get started early on Monday. Enjoy your weekend! JoePlay WikiaStaff.png (talk) 22:42, June 10, 2011 (UTC)

THANKS, I am having a bit of a hard time finding anything big enough to make a background from, but any of the comic covers from dynamite comics warlord of mars, or the promotional art from marvels new John Carter series would be preffered because they are newer works . . . I think maybe joe juskos for for dejah thoris 3? But the marvel series might be more popular since it was approved by ERBS estate . . . I dunno. ralok 00:14, June 11, 2011 (UTC)
How's this look for a potential new background? JoePlay WikiaStaff.png (talk) 19:59, June 13, 2011 (UTC)

That . . . .is truly awesome, I really like that and it captures the spirit well. ralok 20:43, June 13, 2011 (UTC)

Glad you like it! As you should be able to see, I just implemented it as the wiki's background.
Also, for the portals, in order for them to appear like the main page (meaning without the sidebar), the Portal namespace has to be created, which has to be done by a staff member. But before doing that, any pages that begin with Portal: must be temporarily moved (renamed) to any name that doesn't include Portal. Once the existing portal pages are moved, the Portal namespace can be created. Then the pre-existing portal pages can be moved (renamed) back to their original names, and they will then appear without the sidebar. I just finished doing that for the four portals linked to from the main page, but I wanted to explain it to you so you would know why I did what I did, and that simply creating a page named Portal:Whatever doesn't automatically mean that page won't have the sidebar.
So now that the portals are now essentially alternative main pages for the four separate topics, I'll again mention that if you've seen a main page or portal payout that you want to use here, link me to it and I'll be glad to get the framework in place. JoePlay WikiaStaff.png (talk) 22:54, June 13, 2011 (UTC)

Wow thanks for the help, the wiki layout for portals that I like most is the fallout wiki layout! http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Portal:Fallout_2 Thing is I dont like the layout for the main page, the "blogs for news" layout, or the fact that advertisements kinda block out the typical news on the side. . . my idea is to have a sidebar for general navigation in the spot where teh news is (right side) kinda like the appleseed wiki http://appleseed.wikia.com/wiki/Appleseed AND for the newsfeed, I want it to appear under the "portal sphere" thing I guess kinda like the deadspace wiki. The portal sphere will have to be reduced in size . . . and in the newsfeed block thing I kinda want to put a picture of edgar rice burroughs . . . get a picture of the legend of the front page I guess . . . I don't know what picture though but this is my favorite picture of him http://www.sciencecontrol.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Edgar-Rice.jpg sigh I probably did a TERRIBLE job of describing what I want . . . sorry if you dont understand ralok 23:38, June 13, 2011 (UTC)

I think I understand what you're saying. Check out Portal:Test where I've started working on a new main page layout, and give any feedback you have. Feel free to edit it yourself too, if you're comfortable doing so. JoePlay WikiaStaff.png (talk) 17:16, June 14, 2011 (UTC)

Now that is looking awesome!!! The only change I could say is to shave off some of the news items . . . I gotta make a set limit to how many of those I allow on the front page at any given time! Thanks for helping, it has become increasingly important since the first trailer for the john carter movie will be placed before harry potter. And since the book is back on shelves . . . I am terrified that things are going to get messy around here :P I just know, that after the trailer happens there will be a johncarter.wikia.com registered, and I will have to negotiate intensely for a merger to happen . . . sigh . . . bah, people probably wont even care :P ralok 17:33, June 14, 2011 (UTC)

Haha, glad you like the new look. I'm happy to help. Just as a reminder - when you're done putting the finishing touches on the test page, simply copy/paste everything from edit mode to the real main page. Let me know if you need me to do anything else. JoePlay WikiaStaff.png (talk) 18:55, June 14, 2011 (UTC)

Now that the main page is done . . . the only big thing I need help with is making the portal pages attractive . . . but . . . in time . . . I think I can figure that out on my own. If I dont get lazt > _ < ralok 19:16, June 14, 2011 (UTC)

Portals Edit

Hi ralok. I saw the 5 circular buttons you made for the Martian Tales portal. That's a good start. Have you considered using a slider on the portal pages? See an example on the Green Lantern Wiki main page. If you don't have much information or a lot of links to use on each portal, a slider is a good, visually appealing way to showcase up to four important pages or category pages. If there are more than 4 pages that need to be linked to on a portal, you can have a Contents section on the right column. If you'd like to try a slider, pick 4 good images that represent the 4 most important (category) pages for The Martian Tales, and I'll crop them to 673x410 (the specific size needed to use on a slider). Then I'll setup a slider and show you what I did and all info/details needed to make your own sliders. Or if you want to try something other than a slider, let me know what your thoughts are. JoePlay WikiaStaff.png (talk) 21:54, June 22, 2011 (UTC)

The slider I dont really like its function here . . . I just want something basic for the portals that direct the people clicking on it to the worlds . . . I think I need to seperate the real world from the fictional, put a devider down the middle. One side for the lore, teh otehr side for the novels, comics, films, and other such stuff . . . for the otehr portals I want to maintain this same basic structure with the buttons being different shapes, each portal having a unique shape (the pellucidar portal having no set shape, each button a different shape, the moon being triables, the earth being rounded squares, and the venus being octogons . . . I suppose) use just a white placeholder shape for and I will upload more proper images (which are really hard to find) I dont want to over complicate things . . . also . . . the thing on the appleseed wiki . . . they have an image thing that I really like . . .and I think I can use it for one of the portals . . . the martian one I think . . . for the myriad of comics, books, and other media .. . dang . . . I wish the venus series had four books instead of five . . . you know what, stick an image slider on the venus portal, the last "book" in the series is a 75 page short story, the slider can live without the wizard of venus. ralok 22:23, June 22, 2011 (UTC)

I am just being . . . absolutely no help am I . . . . dang it ralok 23:05, June 22, 2011 (UTC)

I just uploaded some placeholder images using the shapes you asked for (and one extra) - triangle, octogon, rounded square and a random shape. About the "image thing" you like on Appleseed Wiki, are you talking about the slideshow? That's another cool feature that you could use to showcase multiple images, and even use captions and have them link to specific pages. An advantage of the slideshow (over a slider) is that the images don't have to be a specific size. You can use any image that's on the wiki, and the slideshow will display it. The format for a slideshow is as follows:
<gallery type="slideshow" widths="500" crop="true" position="center" navigation="true">
SlideshowImage1.jpg|This is the caption|link=Page1
SlideshowImage2.jpg|This is the caption|link=Page2
SlideshowImage3.jpg|This is the caption|link=Page3
SlideshowImage4.jpg|This is the caption|link=Page4
SlideshowImage5.jpg|This is the caption|link=Page5
</gallery>
You can adjust the number for widths= to whatever you need, and you can change the position to be left or right if you don't want it to be center. JoePlay WikiaStaff.png (talk) 20:14, June 23, 2011 (UTC)

I very much like the slideshow . . . I think that I need to use that on the mars portal, or the earth portal . . . . i Really like the slideshow :P ralok 20:28, June 23, 2011 (UTC)

Check out the Venus portal to see the slider and the octogons/words lined up like you were talking about (I think). JoePlay WikiaStaff.png (talk) 21:22, June 24, 2011 (UTC)

They are not lined up how I initially wanted . . . but I can live with the way it is . . . is there anyway I can have three slideshows in a row? one to the right, one int hte center, and the last on the left? ralok 21:56, June 24, 2011 (UTC)

I re-aligned the octogons so that they're staggered now. I also set up 3 side-by-side slideshows on the Martian portal. JoePlay WikiaStaff.png (talk) 23:25, June 24, 2011 (UTC)

AWESOME!!!!!!!! I will get to work fixing it up soon. okay . . . three portals left . . . hmmm . . . I got it . . . for the earth and pellucidar portal . . . the portal will be the same, except everything on the opposite side of the page with the pellucidar portal . . . and the moon maid portal . . . . would it be possible to do this? (going to use the arrows here to represent the triangles)

something like that? Im sorry for massively overcomplicating things > _ < I just wantthis stuff to look good before the trailer for John Carter is released in front of harry potter next month ralok 23:47, June 24, 2011 (UTC)

also . .. how can I label each of the galleries so that its obvious what each one is for . . . just put a picture above the gallery I suppose would be the easier path . . . I dont know :( One gallery is for the books, the next will be for the comics, and the last will be for the films ralok 23:51, June 24, 2011 (UTC)

I broke the mars portal . . . I need a bigger image of mars . . . hmmm ralok 02:10, June 25, 2011 (UTC)

Any chance that I can get a community portal set up here too? To link people to other Edgar Rice Burroughs and barsoom fansites? And put a blog feed on the community portal so people can see what I am the inevitable other users are blogging about? Dangit . . . this is all to much work for me to handle, I dont know how to do half this stuff . . . you have probably a million projects going on . . . . . and I am just plain to stupid to figure out any of this stuff on my own . . . . this is all driving me nuts. ralok 15:33, June 25, 2011 (UTC)

I setup the triangles on the Earth portal with the right-left-right-left pattern you showed. I also fixed the width problem on the Martian portal (the table displaying the header images was set to 104% instead of 100%)
The community corner that Wendy was referring to is actually MediaWiki:Community-corner. It's a message that appears on the right side of the Wiki Activity page. Whenever this message is updated, users that visit the wiki will see a notification at the bottom of the screen saying "Community messages has been updated" which links to the Wiki Activity page. JoePlay WikiaStaff.png (talk) 19:01, June 27, 2011 (UTC)

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH MORE STUFF TO DO D: what the heck is this even . . . does this even matter? does anyone use it . . . what does it do? what purpose does it serve . . .it seems totally pointless . . . . seriously I am confused . . . this makes no sense . . . and I just went through alot of effort making a community portal for nothing UUUGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ralok 19:08, June 27, 2011 (UTC)

Spotlight Request Edit

Hi. If you wish to make a change to your main URL or sitename you need to ask at Special:Contact; these are easy to change. In terms of the spotlight, while the wiki looks good, and the front page is really well done, it appears that much of the front-page linked portal system is broken (too wide) or not in place at all. You would need to at least put up temporary content on all those pages (and make what is there the appropriate width). You would also need to customize the community corner. For the spotlight no more than 1/5th of your articles (about 65 articles in your case) can be stubs; right now there are about 100 stub-length pages (shorter than 300 bytes), or closer to 1/3rd of your content. So you would also need to strengthen the content a bit. Please feel free to ask again when you have straightened out your portals and can meet all the spotlight criteria. -- Wendy (talk)@fandom 04:18, June 25, 2011 (UTC)

I am NOT GOING TO ACCEPT THAT, im going to lay it out straight, the books that the content here is derived from . . . the first one was publish in 1912, the writer is DEAD, we are not goign to be getting more content for most of this stuff . . . EVER . . . now for fixing the portal thing . . . working on that. And what are you talking about customizing the community corner? ralok 15:04, June 25, 2011 (UTC)
okay . . . I see it now . . . the community portal that does not exsist . . . oh boy . . . I need help ralok 15:27, June 25, 2011 (UTC)

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I MADE A COMMUNITY PORTAl, looks like and pretty tooo YEHAW THIS IS GETTING AWESOMEER EVERY DAY. this wiki is going to be loved by all :P ralok 18:03, June 27, 2011 (UTC)

Black Pirates Edit

I took out the Jusko ERB book I have and found it in there. AND, that's the only illustration I know of showing Llana of Gathol

By the way, his Tarzan stuff from that book is even better than his Barsoom paintings.

I also used your Moon series as an excuse to upload Frazetta's well-known painting.

YES!!!!!!!! I noticed, that was frazettas cover for Edgar Rice Burroughs moon maid series (I recommend the bison frontiers of imagination prininting!!!!!) but I worry I might have to take it down because of innacuracies towards the books lore :/ finding accurate moon maid stuff is hard! Thank you for finding the black pirate paining, im going to buy that artbook now I think ralok 03:49, July 10, 2011 (UTC)
I think that any time you use a Frazetta painting, you're going to give up accuracy in favor of his particular vision. Most of the time I think it's well worth it.Transversal 06:53, July 11, 2011 (UTC)

Categories Edit

Ralok, I'm having trouble figuring out how the categories work. In my mind, I would think they are subsets of the portals, but they don't seem to work that way. This might become important for the Earth portal, because you've now got Tarzan and the Caspak series as potential sources of info. How do you want to do those?

Right now I am dividing fauna and races into categories dependent on planet . . . Later I will devide the characters amongst the series . . . Right now the focus is on the mars series! I dont want the categories to be too seperate because I want to get across the fact that these books take place in the same (very complex and big) universe . . . . The caspak series will NOT be included unless someone can find definitive proof that it takes place in the same universe as ERB's other works! This is a wiki for anything that can be traced back to the mars series through the wording of the books! I am going to avoid tarzan stuff as long as possible, adding races and languages before characters and places (except unique places I suppose!) When the inevitable live action tarzan (remake? there has been like a million tarzan films XD) comes along, then tarzan content will get a serious boost . . . Right now . . . five days away from the trailer for the first theatrical adaption of Edgar Rice Burroughs a princess of mars . . . that is my focus . . . .But when it comes time to change the categories around . . . and it will happen . . . I will go through the Extreme effort of changing the categories!!!! ( did it once on the thundercats wiki I will do it again!!!!) For now categorize as you desire . . . have fun while editing! ralok 21:10, July 10, 2011 (UTC)
I think I get your reasoning...Tarzan - Pellucidar - Gridley Wave - Barsoom.Transversal 06:53, July 11, 2011 (UTC)

Frazetta Images Edit

Ralok, I have images of all the interior Frazetta line drawings. I tried to load the first one in the "Frazetta Images" category, but it doesn't look like the other two existing images. What do I need to do in order to make if fit the format?Transversal 07:13, July 11, 2011 (UTC)

I dont understand your difficulty . . . we dont really use image categories here. A few exist but it isnt really necessary. Just click the button "add an image" while on a page and upload the page! It sounds like your difficulty might be in the file format for the destination name and file name might not be hte same, the file you could be uploading could be a png or a jpg, the destination file needs to have the same extension . . . if that isnt the issue please describe your difficulty in greater detail! thank you ralok 09:17, July 11, 2011 (UTC)

Caspak as Part of ERB Universe Which Includes Barsoom Edit

Here is my evidence: In the Caspak series, the German U-boat conducts an attack during WWI against a passenger ship in the beginning of the first book. During the rest of the series, the war against Germany is mentioned repeatedly. Within a year of writing the Caspak series, ERB also wrote the stories which would become "Tarzan the Untamed". These stories include an attack by the Germans during this same war, and Tarzan's combat against their incursion into Africa. Tarzan is linked to Pellucidar and Pellucidar to Barsoom via the Gridley Wave. Hence, the Caspak series is indeed part of the same ERB universe as the others. Transversal 09:04, July 30, 2011 (UTC)

Because they both take place during real world events . . .. . no . . . . that isnt evidence for them taking place in the same series . . . . at least not good evidence, I need a direct reference to a character, event, landmass, technology, creature in any of the series that is unique to the fictional universe. ralok 16:30, July 30, 2011 (UTC)
I see what you mean...you want a fictional character or event which links the two. I would say the identical characterization of the Evil Germans in both cases satisfies this criteria, however, I will continue to look for a connection.Transversal 04:49, July 31, 2011 (UTC)

Believe me I have been searching aswell ralok 10:37, July 31, 2011 (UTC)

Spotlight Request #2 Edit

Hi. Good job working on the content; the wiki looks like it is in good shape now and I can add it too the approved spotlight list. If I approve it now it will probably be spotlighted in mid-September. If you want it spotlighted later then you will need to remind me in a few weeks to add it to the list. Either way, let me know what you want to do on my talk page.

Incidentally it would be nice if you could get all of your front page portals at least minimally functional before the spotlight goes up; they are a neat feature. -- Wendy (talk)@fandom 01:09, August 23, 2011 (UTC)

I shall endeavour to get them working too full functionality. ralok 01:58, August 23, 2011 (UTC)

Hey Ralok just wanted to congradulate you on getting this wiki in Wikia Spotlight. I was on the RvB and saw it in the Wikia Spotlights. Came by and decided I should congradulate you.:) We miss you at the RvB by the way, if you ever get a chance come by.:){{SUBST:Template:Sniperteam82308}} 23:32, September 4, 2011 (UTC)

Request for help Edit

Hi Ralok. I approved your request, and I'm here to follow up with you. One of the things you mentioned was adjusting the theme colors to better match the new background, so I just made a few color changes.

  • Changed the Wikia navigation header (top of page) to the brighter shade of red seen in the background
  • Changed the page color from pure black to a very dark red, which sort of matches the dark shades of red in the background
  • Changed the link color to a slightly lighter/golder shade

Let me know if you don't like any of those changes. For the Earth portal page, tell me what you want to appear on it, and I'll get started. JoePlay WikiaStaff.png (talk) 20:51, September 12, 2011 (UTC) For the earth portal there must be a visible half of the planet earth, a line of buttons for various categories. And a couple of gallery boxes (like the ones on the mars portal) one for films, and the other for books . . . taht is all that will be needed I suppose . . . thhe half of the earth globe should be pretty prominent on the page. . . . Extra thanks for the color adjustments, it looks really nice now. ralok 20:58, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

also . . . one last little request, I use a template here to indicate when something isnt canon, (as seen on this page) . . . and . . . I feel it is a little intrusive . . . do you know of any way it can be improved? ralok 21:23, September 12, 2011 (UTC)
Take a look at Portal:Earth and tell me if that's what you were thinking. I also uploaded an image of the whole Earth in case you change your mind about using half. For the non-canon template, I would recommend making it smaller by removing the WARNING!!! from the top and NON-CANON!!! from the bottom. I would also recommend using just the logo banner for The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen instead of the whole cover, for two reasons: (1) the image of the cover has square corners, so it doesn't match the rounded corners of the template (whereas the logo banner's corners are sort of rounded), and (2) using the whole cover shrunk like that make it a little hard to see/read. If you agree, I can take a few minutes to crop out the logo banner from the cover. Just let me know. JoePlay WikiaStaff.png (talk) 21:55, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

I have given it some thought, and I think I want to remove the image aspect of the non-canon template as it has caused too many problems! And the portal looks rather magnificent. Extra thanks for uploading the image of the earth as a whole, that will make it easier for me to make modifications as needed! It is exactly what I needed thank you very much. ralok 22:03, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

I'm glad I could help (again). :) I found an image of just the LoEG logo banner by itself (link), so I quickly cropped out the white area and uploaded a transparent version of the image here. It might come in handy on the wiki somewhere. JoePlay WikiaStaff.png (talk) 22:06, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

Thank you, I am not sure I will use it though. Incorporating the image aspect of the templates caused an issue though where on the category page, where all the pages would have to same image . . . after so many it seemed to just . . . shut off the image (somehow) I am being wary about how I incorporate the League of Extraordinary gentlemen info linking to the league of extroadinary gentlemen wiki most of the time. It has its own rather complex continuity that hardly includes the stuff found here (but it does include it). For example, all the pages from the LEague of Extroadinary gentlemen comics, are from a single issue . . . and all those aspects were borrowed by alan moore from other martian stories . . . I ranted to long, thanks for your help friend, I might have to use that LEG logo, if not here I will find a use for it ralok 22:12, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

gah . . . stupid canon template thingy . . .. it infuriates me . . . I need a new one , but for now . . . I gotta work on the portals ralok 22:18, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

Redirect URL Edit

Hi Ralok,

There are conversations going on in a few places, so I think it might be best to bring it back here to your main talk page (rather than replying to your email) I made you a theme for this wiki a while back, so I thought maybe I could help here too.

First things first: I'm sorry. There was a lot of confusion over the redirect URL, the person asking for the switch didn't realize it was redirecting to an active wiki, and we shouldn't have agreed to the change.

As Scott said, we were asked to start a movie-specific wiki at that address, which isn't something we're able to change now.

What we can do is try and make this right in other ways. We'd like to invite you to be admin/bureaucrat on the new wiki. Although it would be movie-specific, it could link heavily to this wiki, so the two would be part of a whole.

Also, you mentioned that you've been wanting a spotlight for this wiki, I'll ask for that to happen as soon as possible.

If you want to talk this over on chat, or to email again, please do. I'm in the Community Central chat a lot, and can try to get there any time that suits.

Again, I'm sorry for the confusion. I can't give back the redirect, but hope we can still work together on this. -- sannse WikiaStaff.png (help forum | blog) 01:10, October 11, 2011 (UTC)

Hi Ralok,
I understand you are upset, and want to try and help. I'm not going to discuss who clicked what button - it was a mistake not to contact you before changing the redirect, but not a malicious one. The new wiki wasn't paid for, but it was requested by the movie company. They wanted there to be one that was specific to the movie, which is why yours wasn't suitable. I've turned on chat for this wiki, and will try and be in there as long as possible today so we can talk. Hopefully we can work things out that way. -- sannse WikiaStaff.png (help forum | blog) 17:42, October 11, 2011 (UTC)

RE:Boss I need your help Edit

Sorry to be so late in responding to you. A bunch of vandals hit the Mass Effect Fan-Fiction Wiki last week, and I was asked to help the badly inexperienced admin over there with cleaning up the damage.

It looks like Wikia has already gotten back to you about the more egregious error. As for your wider complaint about the establishment of a wiki devoted to the movie without our input... Meh. As far as I'm concerned, the movie is related to the world envisioned by Burroughs in about the same way that the Red Martians are related to the Firstborn. Once the inevitable sequels and transmedia tie-ins come out, it will mutate further. We shall enslave it to and devour it for sustenance, but personally, I'm not going to give it any more importance on this wiki than any of the other adaptations of Burroughs' work. -- Gnostic 16:28, October 20, 2011 (UTC)

Movin' On Up Edit

Ralok, with my duties to the Mass Effect Fanon wiki continuing to grow and with the impending John Carter movie making it necessary for this site to continue to be maintained, I have decided to promote you to the level of Bureaucrat. Take good care of this place. You can still contact me on my talk page if anything comes up. Congratulations! -- Gnostic 06:34, November 23, 2011 (UTC)

Llana pic Edit

That one pic I put on the Llana article. It was Llana.jpg I think, well I put that on there because I wanted you to add it to the article. Could you please use Llana.jpg for her picture on that article because I think that works great.

As I am reading Llana of Gathol right now . . . I can honestly say . . . it isnt a good picture, you also added a really stupid page called "llana of gathol and john carter of mars" just because the two books were published together a few times does not mean they are one book ralok (talk) 21:52, July 13, 2012 (UTC)

RE:Whoa Edit

So are you saying that those rather ugly banners that you place on non-canon articles are insufficient to prevent confusion between what is and is not canon? Besides that, I would suggest that the quality of a given character's provenance (or, more precisely, your opinion thereof) should not necessarily dictate how they are categorized in terms of race. If they are written and depicted in a manner that is more or less consistent with Burroughs, then as far as I am concerned, they are Red Martians, or Green Martians, or First Born, etc. Even Burroughs himself occasionally broke from the canon (most notably with the sudden introduction of Carter's previously-unmentioned daughter Tara in Chessmen.)

That said, if the character is depicted and written in a way that is radically different from what Burroughs created, then yes, those would be considered non-canon Red Martians. -- Gnostic (talk) 21:18, August 15, 2012 (UTC)

Oh I agree with you, but it doesnt change the fact that they . . . are not canon. And I am going to get a better banner soon okay . . . I know they are ugly :( but no amount of accuracy to canon . . . will make something canon, only Burroughs original work is canon . . . but I have a category for all non-canon red martians . . . so they shouldnt be categorized with canon red martians . . . ralok (talk) 21:21, August 15, 2012 (UTC)

Info templates Edit

Can you please put information templates on the Kala and Kerchak articles for me? I don't know how to do it. - Elcidman

So...question. Edit

I was just visiting and reliving some stuff from the Mass Effect Wiki's past when one thing led to another and I wound up on your user page. Then I started thinking about your ban.

Seriously, have you contacted Spart about his, or any other admin for that mater? It's been awhile now, and Spart said he was considering putting you up and the Ban Review Panel, and he seemed to be leaning towards doing it, but now it's as if it completely slipped his mind or something. I left him a message a long time ago about it, saying that it has been awhile and wondering if he would still do it. He said he was still thinking about it or something like that. Well it has been over a year I think since I left that message, and nothing.

Anyways, the whole point of this message is to tell you that you might want to consider contacting Spart about it incase he forgot. You seemed to have changed for the better and I believe you are ready to return.

Troubles with infoboxEdit

I have been having issues with the infobox on the David Innes article.  The image is Davidinnes.jpg but I can't seem to get it to show up.  Can you fix it?  Also, tell me how I can make the image show up next time and what pixel size is appropriate.    Jadenyuki93 (talk) 04:05, January 30, 2013 (UTC)

I did what you said I was supposed to do on the David Innes article (I think) but it didn't work.   Jadenyuki93 (talk) 04:14, January 30, 2013 (UTC)

Okay, I understand now about how to use the infobox.

Thanks!Edit

Hiya dude, thanks for that :) Yeah, I have been reading some of the issues and thought to contribute. I tend to love expanded universes seen in comics and books that go beyond things we seen in 'official sources'. Like Star Trek or Stargate. I mean sure, some of the stuff can be bad but others can be soooo good. Like with Warlord of Mars where we see the Colossus and Machine Men... the latter remind me so much of the Cybermen from Doctor Who. Darth Batrus (talk) 17:09, February 15, 2013 (UTC)

Alien Species Wiki Edit

Hello Ralok, please explain why you blocked me, i have not been vandalising the page, i undid the edit and changed every mention of Arcosian to Frieza's race, and you did not give me any warnings.Neffyarious (talk) 10:06, March 26, 2013 (UTC)

  • I know my ban was brief, but It made no sense, I only put the word Arcosian on three spots on the page, at the beginning, to state it was a possibility, and in the race's name area (though I admit it should not have gine there), and in the Name section - which detailed the species possible name, everywhere else was completely Arcosian (and Changeling, an evil less canon name) free. One of Wikia's rule is that you provide at least two notifications warning of a ban, you did no such thing.Neffyarious (talk) 14:00, March 26, 2013 (UTC)
  • Okay, thank you for understanding.Neffyarious (talk) 08:08, March 27, 2013 (UTC)

Heya!  For the most part, I'm going through and cleaning up some grammar (I was a teacher once, it sticks with me) :p

That said, I note that the pages of things other than Barsoom seem a little thin.  I presume that this was originally just going to be a Martian wiki?  I like that there's multiple portals :)  I'm just curious more than anything else.  I'd love to see them filled out.

Finally, I have a link here for all the Whelan covers, without print on them.  It'd be awesome to get them onto the pages for their books.  However, that is beyond my ability... can ya give me a hand on that?

Crucible Era Edit

Hey Ralok... I have a possible favor to ask of you.  I have been working on a wiki for a few years now, for a large international gaming org (set in the White Wolf World of Darkness).  We have a cool wiki for info... but our skin is the basic, and it looks like a TPS report.  Also, we are adding a few things to it, and we need different 'portals' at the opening, much like how the Encyclopedia Barsoomia has the, Mars/Earth/Moon/Venus portals at the front page of this wiki.

To cut to the chase... is there any way I can ask for your help?  Obviously, I cannot pay anything, but I will credit you and give you full accolades on this.  I've had two other people in the past say they 'could help', but they never stepped up :(

If you have the ability, or can at least give me pointers/help, that'd be swell.

Thanks!

Helping to Make Infoboxes More Mobile Friendly Edit

Hey Ralok!

We’re reaching out to a few of our top communities, hoping to get you on board with the migration to the new infobox markup. And we have tools to help!

‘’’Why we’re doing this’’'

Simply put: Most current infobox structure translates very poorly to mobile experiences, and indeed any device that doesn’t use desktop-style displays. On desktops and laptops, they often look amazing. The problem is that Wikia’s traffic is trending mobile.

There is an important graph from our forum post about infoboxes a couple weeks back, and I want to share it here as well:

File:Wikia mobile traffic growth.jpg

Mobile is the future. Not just for Wikia, but for the web as a whole. Take a look at the recent trends and future growth predictions for mobile traffic - it's staggering.

We partnered with the Wikia community to create this new markup to make sure that your hard work can be displayed on mobile devices (as well as any future technologies) easily and without any new coding conventions. It’ll take some effort up front, to be sure, but we’re here to help, and the work you put in now will pay for itself tenfold in the future.

‘’’Tools we’ve designed to ease the process’’’

We’ve enabled two new features on your community. One is a tool for migrating the “old” infobox code to the new markup. It identifies templates on your wikia that look like infobox templates and places a box on the right rail of the template page. When you click the “Generate draft markup” button in this box, it opens a new tab containing a draft of your infobox using the new markup.

The second is a new feature on Special:Insights that will highlight which infoboxes on your wikia have not been migrated to the new infobox markup. It’s fairly intuitive - you can click on the infobox title link itself to see the old markup, or simply click the “Convert!” button on the right, which performs the same action as the “Generate draft markup” button.

This is our help page for the new markup. I’ll help get things rolling by converting a template or two as an example if you’d like me to, as well as watching this forum post for any questions.

Hey there! Just checking back in about this ^^^ Let me know if you have any questions, comments, concerns. Hope you had a great weekend! Jamie @fandom (profile)•(talk) 20:24, July 27, 2015 (UTC)

DC Edit

Hey Ralok, Tupka from the DC Database here. Pleased to meat you. As you mayk now, DC held the license for Burroughs' characters for a while, and published several comics based on Tarzan and Warlord. I can't really find much about it on your site, you only seem to have Weird Worlds. DC's first Tarzan stuff was Korak, Son of Tarzan, which started at #46 (picking up where Gold Key had quit), up until #59 (1972-1975) and then renamed it to Tarzan Family for 6 issues (1975-1975). Mostly Tarzan, but John Carter also appeared in a back-up feature in Family. From 1972 to 1977, DC also continued Gold Key's Tarzan of the Apes (#207-#258). When they quit, Marvel took over.

The reason I'm telling you this is we've had a long process getting rid of our pages on licensed properties. There's no point for us to have pages on such titles as Star Trek, Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo, or the tons and tons of video game tie-ins DC and its imprints have done, when there are specific wikis on the topic that know much more about it than we do. We don't have much specific info you don't have already, apart from some issue summaries (which won't be deleted). With other licensed characters, we made sure they linked to the other wiki's page, but we've had some issues finding a complete wiki on Burroughs. We're going to link to your wiki, but that will include some characters, like Abner Perry, you don't have pages for yet.

Hope to hear from you with your thoughts on the matter. --Tupka217 12:43, July 26, 2015 (UTC)

Okay, I've changed all the links. Just so you know, these are the redlinks: Abner Perry, Jane Porter, Korak and Tangor (the protagonist of Beyond the Farthest Star). --Tupka217 21:01, July 26, 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for wecloming me. I'm pretty new at wikia, so if you have any tips, that would be great.

Galaxy Quest News! Edit

Hey Ralok! My name is Mandy and I'm a Fandom Wiki Manager for the TV/Movies vertical. I'm reaching out to you because as the founder of Galaxy Quest Wiki, I thought you might be interested in hearing some exciting news. In celebration of Galaxy Quest's upcoming 20th anniversary, Fandom has produced a new feature-length documentary about the film and its legacy, which will premiere at New York Comic Con on October 5th! Feel free to check out this article for additional details. In preparation for the new release, I'll be doing some work on the wiki, and seeing how you've been a top contributor in the past, I was wondering if you'd be interested in helping out. Let me know what you think and I look forward to hopefully working with you in the future! :) —idekmandy 05:13, September 26, 2019 (UTC)
