The Chessmen of Mars is the fifth book in Edgar Rice Burroughs' Martian series.
It focuses on the adventures of Tara, the daughter of John Carter and Dejah Thoris, after a strange storm sweeps her far away from her native Helium. Over the course of her journey, she is repeatedly imperiled, first in the strange land of Bantoom, where she is captured and studied by the Kaldanes, and then in the city of Manator, where she is made the stakes in a giant game of jetan.
