James K. Powell was an Earth man from Richmond, Virginia and a friend of John Carter.

Like Carter, he served as a captain in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. Before Carter's advent on Mars, the two men were prospecting for gold in Arizona, where Powell lost his life to a tribe of hostile Apaches.
