Barsoom is a series by Edgar Rice Burroughs about Barsoom, the fictional representation of Mars. The main protagonist of this series is John Carter, a human who can transport himself to Mars under mysterious circumstances.
The series consists of ten novels total, a short story collection, and a novella.
Background[]
Burroughs began writing the Barsoom books in the second half of 1911, and produced one volume a year between 1911 and 1914. Seven more were produced between 1921 and 1941. The first Barsoom tale was serialised as Under the Moons of Mars in 1912, and published in book form as A Princess of Mars in 1917. The final Barsoom tale was a novella, Skeleton Men of Jupiter, published in Amazing Stories in February 1943.

John Carter of Mars (2009) is the first known live-action adaptation of Barsoom: A Princess of Mars (1912). It is a direct-to-DVD film, and was released December 29, 2009. It stars Antonio Sabato Jr. as John Carter and Traci Lords as Dejah Thoris.
John Carter (2012)[]
John Carter (2012) is the high budget live-action adaptation film of the novel Barsoom: A Princess of Mars (1912). It was directed by Pixar animator, Andrew Stanton, and stars Taylor Kitsch as John Carter and Lynn Collins as Dejah Thoris. It was released March 9, 2012 was considered the biggest box office bomb in history. Many point to the film's poor marketing as its failure, while others say that the film was doomed from the start because modern audiences would think of John Carter (2012) as unoriginal (since the source material had been appropriated many times in modern science-fiction).

Barsoom (series) has influenced many modern science-fiction media, such as James Cameron's Avatar, Frank Herbert's Dune (series), and John Norman's Gor (series).
